Frame Me

Last visit to J's pediatric dentist.  What a super dentist this has been.  He's been so wonderful through the years.  Got the name they recommended for J's adult dentist.  Of course J didn't have any cavities.  Must be nice.

Then we drove over to the new frame shop here in town.  Very nice man and great service.  I'll be taking the pics back to him on Wednesday for framing - one for the show - two for me - and a couple more that need hanging gear.  Costly - but done right.  Art is NOT cheap.

Still haven't gotten stuff off to ACT - must do that.  Grass pollen must be increasing - having to us inhaler more each day.

Hope you have blessed one.

Blessed Surprises

Throw_nets07a Sometimes God just does something totally unexpected.  And that is exactly what happened to me last Thursday.  Yes - I'm doing the backward ketchup posting again!

Most of us in my Thursday art class are working with oils.  We do have one lone ranger who works in acrylics.  She does beautiful work in them too.  Our teacher prefers to work in acrylics as well.  He says he doesn't have the patience to work in oils and acrylics dry fast.  (which is true considering it takes an oil painting six months to dry before you apply varnish)

Every week Chris does a small demonstration for us to introduce us to new art products, tools, or to give us some technique tips.  The class enjoys them and we've all learned alot.  Last Thursday, Chris brought in some of the plein air paintings (fancy way of saying outdoor painting) that he had done in watercolors while in Europe.  First let me say that Chris is an architect and his ability to draw buildings in perspective is awesome.  He had a the tiniest little watercolor kit I've ever seen (easily packed).  He said he would stop and quickly sketch the building in pencil, and then go over the drawing in waterproof marker.  Then we would whip out his paints and finish the painting.  Let's say that these were good enough to either make postcards or put in a book - seriously!   Anyway - we all "ooh-ed and ahhed" over his beautiful pictures.

I was holding one of his pictures when it hit me like a ton of bricks.  The technique he used was what I had used in high school!  When I decided to try and paint again I had immediately thought of watercolors - that's where I had had my success years ago.  However, when I bought the watercolors and paper - I couldn't remember how to go about doing what I had done before.  I even went out and bought a couple of books on the subject  - nothing helped.  And that is why I decided to try oils.

But while seeing Chris's work, the light bulb went off!  I got SO excited.  I came home and rattled off a picture that I can't show you (cause Santa's on the way), the picture of the barn on my Christmas page, another one I can't show you (teasing you here), and last night I did the one that you see on this post - btw you can enlarge it for a better look by clicking on the pic.  Not only did I remember the techniques,  I also had the realization that I had learned so much about color through oils in the past year. I had Pandora serenading me in the background and I was one happy camper.  Pandora by the way plays an awesome list of holiday music with Bing, Sinatra, et al with NO interruptions - for free).

There is something about this picture that blesses me.  Hubby says it looks like an angel - so did Chris.  It is really a fisherman throwing out the net.  All I can think of when I look at it is - what have you caught lately?

Which reminds me of something that happened the other day in Wally World.  (Walmart) I was going down the aisle and this elderly lady was coming toward me.  She was obviously shopping for herself.  There wasn't much in the cart.  But she was dressed nicely.  Her white curly hair was coiffed, and she had on a winter dressy cardigan sweater with a fur collar.  And I hesitated.... and then I took the plunge.  I walked up to her and told her how pretty she was in her outfit and so ready for the holidays.   She looked startled at first  - and then - she then she blessed me with a girlish smile.

I went fishing and I caught a smile - and it blessed me.  What have you caught lately?

Knitting My Life Away

Morning:

  • Wake up Jbird.
  • Wake up cold car.
  • Drive through local eatery for a biscuit and drink.
  • Drop off J at Y.
  • Drive home.
  • Feed dog.
  • Let dog out.
  • Check email.
  • Check news.
  • Knit whilst watching/listening to one of the worst movies I've ever seen.  Won't even mention it here.  We got it for ten cents and in the garbage it went.

Afternoon:

  • Make a couple of calls.
  • Knit a few more rows.
  • Pick up Jbird.
  • Finish watching "Dances with Wolves" (which I'd never seen before) rating - 3.5/5
  • Knit a few more rows

Evening:

  • Start family Christmas page - mostly done - needs some tweaks.
  • Talked to my SIL (again) about the cell phone online ordering.  Think "Verizon for Dummies".  Can't figure out why this is so beyond me right now.
  • Realize I am no where near ready for tomorrow.
  • Fix dinner.
  • Work on blog posts.
  • Knit to another movie until I fall asleep.

The Shawl for a Friend

Dscn2312 After the success of the Forest Canopy shawl in Jaeger Zephyr, I started a shawl in Skacel as posted here.  I must say the second time around was much easier.  Of course the problem was I could barely see due to the allergies with my eyes.  However, I was determined.

Dscn2311

So I have a Finished Object:

Dscn2313 Pattern:  Forest Canopy Shawl

Yarn:  Skacel Merino Lace

Needles:  size 7 (up two sizes from the Zephyr - 15 repeats of the pattern

Started:  November 2007 - completed November 2007 (about a week)

The good:  The color is beautiful and is exactly what I hoped for.

The bad:  This yarn does NOT block as well as the Zephyr.  The yarn is not as elastic and therefore the shawl was not as large as I would have liked.  However, I didn't realize that this was the yarn that the cat had gotten into (a year or more ago) and therefore there was a substantial amount of yarn that was missing.

I have another hank of this yarn in a teal.  I will make the next one with at least 19 repeats of the pattern for a larger shawl.

Oh - I finally have my account with Ravelry up and going.  I even have two projects listed.  I created an account with Flickr so I could post pictures on Ravelry easier.  Let me say, I really enjoy Ravelry.  It is so nice to look up a pattern or yarn and see pics and specs of what others have done.

Finalforestshawl

Voila!  The Forest Canopy Shawl.  .  Stats:

Pattern:  Forest Canopy Shawl by Susan Pierce Lawrence

Yarn: Jaeger Zephyr Wool-Silk/blueberry

Needles: size 5 Denise interchangeables - because I used smaller needles I made 19 repeats before I started the edging.

Comments:  This really is a good pattern to learn lace on.  Very simple and you can watch TV and knit (really).  The yarn is gorgeous.  This is lightweight lace.  After I finished knitting the pattern, I rinsed it, patted it dry, and then stretched and pinned it.  The suggestion to use the playmats you can get at Sam's was a super!  What a nice surface to block on and easily put up and taken down for storage.  Will I make it again?  Yes - I've already got one started on number seven needles in a wool blend - still lightweight lace in red.  I can't wait to make up the pattern with fingerweight yarn.

It truly is a beautiful pattern.  The finished shawl is light as a feather.Overchairshawl  I hope the person it is gifted to likes it.  This is a Christmas present for someone special.

Art Class

Blueleaves1 Blueleaves2 Some of you may remember that last fall I took the plunge and started taking some art classes - after a hiatus of thirty plus years.  I took a beginning oil painting class and a drawing class.  The painting class frustrated me and the drawing class was fantastic.

In January I decided to take both drawing 2 and a different beginning oil painting from Chris - the drawing instructor.  I don't know why - but Chris and I seem to click on some level and I feel comfortable in his classes.  This fall I started and finished the sunflower picture - a great learning experience but not an original.  I have laid out plans for a set of pictures that potentially could be fantastic, but refuse to start them because I know I don't have the ability I need yet to get them where I want.  So I started looking at this pic again and realized how shallow it was.

Sorry about the quality of the photos.  My camera and I need a parting of the ways.   I loved the colors of this plant (there really is a plant that has these great colors)  But knowing what I know now,  I realized how flat and poorly composed the picture had been. So I decided to work on it again.  I changed the direction of one of the main leaves, took some elements out, put some elements in, balanced the colors more, and did  (what felt like) endless shading of colors.  I don't know if you can tell because of my poor pics - but now you can sense the shape and roll of the leaves.  And even if my latest photo doesn't pick it up - that gorgeous blue is still there.

What blessed me was that my art teacher said this should be the first of my paintings to enter into a show.  He said it showed my potential. That was the icing on the cake.

PS:  I never, ever use black in my paintings - that is Alizaron and Prussian Blue mixed to create an almost purple black color.  Wish the colors were more evident.

Waiting for Wires

Ms307shawl Ummm.... that pile of stuff in the picture is my MS3 shawl waiting for me to go get the wires.  However, I am knitting.  I worked alot today on the Forest Canopy Shawl.  I am really going to like doing this pattern in a heavier lace or sock weight yarn.  I've been surfing through some of the yarns at Loopy Ewe and have several picked out as possibilities.

I drove Jay to work and did some errands and then discovered I don't have my card holder.  Now my card holder has a wad of credit cards, insurance cards, and my driver's license.  I tried very hard not to panic.  By the time I figured out that I had to have left it at the art gallery, it was too late to go and retrieve it.

Art's Back

I failed to tell you that I started my art class yesterday.  It is so good to be with there again.  Some of the people have returned and some have "moved on" to different classes.  This class works fine for me right now.  Wednesday night I worked on a preliminary sketch.  I really didn't have an idea what I wanted to do with it, but I took it to class with me anyway.

Off Jbird and I went.  He had to start work at two - so he had to come with me so I could drive him to work during my lunch break.  This is where the new portable dvd player comes in handy.  He was able to take his Spanish dvd's with him and listen with a headset.

I drove him over to Little Italy's to get a sub and he bought me a couple of cannolis.  Yummy.

Then back to the class where the drawing was beginning to take some form in the "idea" department.  So I traced my detailed work in progress and began working on my new idea.  The excitement came when I began to envision the idea in color and in oils.  I shared my ideas with me teacher who thought them exciting.  I began producing the little "sketches" which help you plan the composition of your picture and play with colors.

Which brings us to this morning - when I got online and went to Dick Blick's and ordered fifty some dollars worth of colors.  I see bronzes, coppers, and some golds - all of which I didn't have.  I also got a paint medium which Carly had suggested to me.  It will all be whisking its way to me in a few days.  Meanwhile I can continue to plan the picture - if not get a tracing on the canvas and perhaps even the under-painting - which I normally do lightly with a mixture of turp and paint.

Plans for the day:

  1. laundry - why doesn't this ever go away
  2. homeschool - ditto but the end is in sight
  3. maybe a trip to the welding store
  4. take meds (oh please bless my hurting stomach)
  5. work on art project
  6. if I get the wires - block my knitting
  7. start another knitting project
  8. clean up house and decorate for Autumn

Closing Doors

J261t I have to convince myself that I will continue in my art.  But right now.... it ain't gonna happen.  There is too much going on to even attempt to paint or draw.  I went over to my teacher's studio to tell her it's a done deal for now but missed her.  It's a phone call and/or email I really didn't want to make - but something that had to be done.

Likewise - sonny boy needs to call his violin teacher and do the same.  He's been SO busy the past couple of weeks helping his aunt move, that he hasn't had any time for his violin studies.  And I'm still trying to deal with the difference between my amibitions for him and his own heart's desires in that area.

Hole In Ones

Ms3clue2finished Sorry about the quality of the picture.  If you knew what I went through to get it - you would be VERY appreciative. (why is it the rechargeable batteries you buy need recharging immediately?  Which frustrates me to NO end when I can't find the battery recharger!)

However, to nicer things....this is the Mystery Stole 3 with Clue 2 finished and Clue 3 started.  People - I'm doing lace.  I'm SO proud of myself. We won't discuss that there is NO way that I will have Clue 3 finished by Friday.  With all that is going on around here, I knit when I can catch snippets of time.  This is the light gray Mulberry Ridge lace weight silk/wool.  I LOVE this yarn.  It is not the spidery fine lace weight - which is beautiful in its own right.  This yarn is going to stretch out beautifully.  This would have looked very nice with amber beads or even clear or black beads would have been interesting.   Still haven't started the Zephyr yarn I got in.  Must get needles to work on it.

Hubby took a day off from helping his sister move.  He went out to lunch and golfing with some buds.  Fine by me.  I knew he was exhausted when he got home yesterday.  When school starts he'll be going around the clock - so I don't begrudge him some leisure time now.  Well, okay, so maybe I would like my "honey do" list worked on some. (okay a whole lot)

Jason and I worked on homeschooling.  Some days he makes it like pulling teeth.  This was one of those days.

But - I'm still happy with my knitting accomplishments.  Just wish there were more hours in the day so I could do more.  Oh - speaking of hours - you would not believe how many emails come in a day from the MS3 group!  Wow.
